Blood donations needed in Monterey County
Blood donations are needed on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Blood Center of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is seeking volunteers to give blood through mid-October. Although the need for donated blood in the Monterey area has declined over the past five years, the Blood Center is still in need of donations prior to its scheduled closure mid-October.
While almost all blood type donations are requested, community members with blood types A- and O+ are especially needed.
CHOMP officials announced earlier this month that it would close its blood center on Oct. 16 due to lower demand for blood products because of advances in medical science and blood management.
Despite the impending closure, blood donations are still needed over the next several weeks.
After the center’s closure, Community Hospital will begin working with United Blood Services.
For more information about the blood center, click hereor call 625-4814. Donors must be 17 or older, (16 with parental permission,) and weigh at least 110 pounds.
In addition to Community Hospital Blood Center donation hours, two mobile blood drives are scheduled to assist with the efforts. On Sunday, September 14, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Congregation Beth Israel will host a drive at 5716 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel. LanguageLineSolutions will host a blood drive on Tuesday, September 23 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 1 LowerRagsdale Road., Building 2 in Monterey.
