Salinas woman admits to elder abuse, tax fraud

A 42-year-old Salinas woman accused of elder abuse and tax fraud pleaded no contest to multiple charges Tuesday.

Daisy Yolanda Ramirez pleaded no contest in Monterey County Superior Court to felony elder abuse relating to neglect, with likelihood to cause great injury. She also pleaded to felony charges of failing to file tax returns and fraudulently collecting unemployment from the state of California.

Ramirez is due back in court on Oct. 21, at which time she’s expected to be sentenced to felony probation and ordered to pay restitution to the state tax board, the employment development department, the public guardian’s office and the victim.

Ramirez was hired to take care of the victim in 2009 and over the next few years, the Monterey Police and Fire Departments responded numerous times to
aid the woman. Officers eventually determined she was a victim of extreme neglect by Ramirez.

Law enforcement officials also discovered Ramirez was lying on her tax returns and had collected unemployment benefits while she was, in fact, employed.
