Farmworkers team up with Monterey County Agriculture Commissioner

A local advocacy group has teamed up with the Agriculture Commissioner to create a new Farmworker Advisory Committee.

Farmworkers gathered at the Monterey County Agriculture Commissioner’s Office in Salinas Tuesday to introduce the new committee.

The group is made up of six farmworker leaders, and was put together to advise the county on pesticide regulations and other safety matters. The Center for Community Advocacy said this relationship between the Agriculture Commission and Farmworkers is the first of its kind in California.

“The agriculture community is so important in Monterey County, and farmworkers are crucial to that. That it’s important to have a system in place that protects agriculture,” said Juan Uranga with the Center for Community Advocacy.

The committee is expected to meet regularly with the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner.
