Assemblyman Luis Alejo announces four California Peace Award winners

Four people are being recognized by Assemblyman Luis Alejo as California Peace Award winners for the 30th Assembly District.

Elizabet Zepeda Gonzalez, a social and behavioral sciences major at CSU Monterey Bay, is being recognized for her work in the community through the League of United Latin American Citizens. She is the organization’s former National Youth League vice president for the far west region. She is a native of Hollister.

Paul De Worken, a 2008 CSUMB graduate, has been active in arts throughout the Pajaro Valley. He’s served on the Watsonville Public Art Committee, the Santa Cruz County Arts Commission, and created the Mural Alleyway Project to provide art to the Watsonville community.

Javier Tamayo, a Salinas resident, works with East Salinas youth through music. He has taught numerous workshop classes to kids looking for safe and creative ways to explore the discipline, practice and performance of playing drums in their neighborhood.

Mario Banuelos is a counselor for Camp Everytown of Silicon Valley FACES. He advocates for the under-represented youth of south Santa Clara County through various community programs.

The four recipients will be recognized by Alejo at two ceremonies to be held as part of National Night Out on Aug. 5.

The first presentation begins at 6 p.m. at Las Animas Park located at 400 Mantelli Dr., Gilroy. The second presentation begins at 6:30 next to the Solari Green Technology Center, 318 Union St., Watsonville.

Each year, one individual from each of the four counties in Alejo’s district — San Benito and parts of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Monterey counties—is recognized for their efforts to promote peace in their respective communities.
