Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office appoints first female canine handler

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has appointed its first female canine handler.

Deputy Cassandra Cassingham will serve with her new partner, Duke, a 3-year-old German Shepherd on patrol.

Deputy Cassingham and Duke completed an intensive eight week training program approved by the California Peace Office and Standards Commission.

Duke is certified in narcotics detection as well as locating and apprehending suspects.
