Gilroy Police: Man seriously injures hand with illegal firework

Gilroy police say a 24-year-old man seriously injured his hand after igniting an illegal mortar-type firework Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the 8100 block of Carmel Street around 9 p.m. Witnesses told them the firework exploded while it was still in the man’s hand, burning his hand along with other parts of his body, including his face.

He was flown to a Bay Area Hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
