CHP cracks down on bikers making their way to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

The California Highway Patrol had extra officers out on the roadways this weekend for the World Superbike Championship held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

It was a special enforcement to make sure drivers stayed safe on the highway.

As thousands of bikers made their way to the big event, motorcycle officers geared up for a full-force crackdown on riders.

“We’re really not going to tolerate any type of foolish activity on the roadway,” said Nathan Ashby with the California Highway Patrol.

Officers said they tend to see bikers racing down the highway at speeds that you would typically see on a racetrack.

The operation, which focuses on reducing the number of fatal and injury accidents involving motorcycles, puts additional officers on the roadways during events like this.

“There’s a heavy influx of motorcycle traffic,” said Officer Ashby.

Funding is provided through a grant that gives CHP Monterey about 100 hours’ worth of overtime pay for the officers.

This year, the CHP said bikers have been driving smarter.

“The presence in the years past has kind of trickled down and people know that we’re out here and that we’re out here to enforce the law,” said Officer Ashby.

As of Sunday night, officers wrote about 200 citations this weekend. Most of them were for speeding.

As many fans make their way home from a busy weekend, officers hope drivers won’t take speeding beyond the tracks.
