Early morning blaze damages duplex on Altamont Street in Watsonville

An early morning fire damaged a two-family home on Altamont Street Thursday, Watsonville police said.

Fire officials were dispatched to an unknown alarm just after 3 a.m. Police were first on scene and ensured residents of the duplex with safely evacuated.

One resident was eventually transported to Watsonville Community Hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and the local chapter of the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced families.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point and is still under investigation.
