Monterey County to talk about possible acquisition

Monterey County will hold a community meeting on the possible acquisition of the former Capital One facilities, which closed last year taking almost 900 jobs with it.

Capitol One announced in 2012 its credit card processing center would leave town.

Monterey County wants to hear comments and questions from the community related to the possible acquisition of the building, located at 1441 and 1488 Schilling Place in Salinas. Members of the public, business community and county employees are invited to participate.

The meeting will be held Thursday, June 5th from 5-7 p.m. in the Monterey Room at the Government Center, 168 West Alisal Street in Salinas.

At the community meeting, there will be a presentation outlining the county’s business interest in the properties and how this potential acquisition would fit in with county’s plan to maintain core services in downtown Salinas.

Several business associations spoke out earlier this month, like the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, which said the public should get a say about the potential economic impact the aquistion would have on the community. The chamber said places like Old Town Salinas depends on the business from county employees who currently work only blocks away.

The chamber sent the county a letter stipulating their concerns.
