Street sweeper truck crashes into Monterey home

A street sweeper truck crashed into a home on the corner of Prescott Avenue and Cypress Street in Monterey Tuesday morning.

The homeowner, Susan Schafer, told Central Coast News that she was watching television around 7 a.m. when the truck crashed into her kitchen. She originally thought there had been an explosion and that the house was on fire because of the truck’s flashing amber lights.

Schafer and her two cats got out of the home safely.

The truck is owned by Monterey City Disposal. The driver apparently had problems driving the truck uphill on Prescott Avenue, according to the company’s owner. The driver got out of the truck to inspect the problem and when he got back in and put it into gear, it rolled downhill into the house. He suffered minor injuries to his elbow.

Crews are at the home cleaning up the house but the truck hadn’t been removed as of about 11:45 a.m.
