The Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz turns 90
The state’s oldest roller coast is turning 90 Saturday.
The Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is not only the oldest in the state – it’s one of the oldest in the country, continuously operating in its original location.
The ride was built in 1924 by Arthur Looff, son of Charles Looff, who created the Boardwalk’s iconic carousel. Both rides were designated National Historic Landmarks in 1987.
The ride officially opened on May 17, 1924. Back then, the fare was just 15 cents. Nowadays, thanks to inflation, it’s $6 per ride.
On Saturday, however, rides on the classic coaster will be free from 10 to 11 a.m., and the first 500 riders after 11 a.m. will receive special Giant Dipper commemorative pins. There also will be performances by the Lost at Sea street drum corps at 1 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m., a performance by rockers Y&T, who will also play a free show at the Boardwalk on Aug. 1.
