SPCA warning pet owners about hot weather

The SPCA for Monterey County is reminding residents that high temperatures can be very dangerous for pets.

Pets should be kept indoors or be provided with ample shaded areas. Fresh water must be available at all times.

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Pets — and children — shouldn’t be left unattended in enclosed vehicles. In fact, doing so under “circumstances that could reasonably be expected to cause suffering, disability, or death to the animal” is against state law.

On a warm day, the interior of a parked car can reach more than 120 degrees in fewer than five minutes – even with the windows partially open — causing serious health problems and even brain damage or death.
