North Salinas High School athletes battle the heat

Heat stroke is the leading cause in preventable death for high school students, according to the top national and sports organizations. North Salinas High School isn’t taking any chances with the temperatures rising in the next few days.

“We had a meeting with all our coaches about making sure the athletes have enough water, are in the shade when they are not competing, and making sure no one is over-exerting themselves,” says Jean Ashen, athletic director of North Salinas High School.

Ashen says this is unusual for her athletes, because they are not used to playing sports games in 90 degree weather in May.

“All of our coaches take a heat and climatization class,” Ashen said. “In recent years concussions have been a hot topic, but heat and climatization is going to become a mandatory course for coaches.”
