UPDATE: Man killed in officer-involved shooting outside Mi Pueblo Market
Salinas Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred around 7:20 Friday night at Mi Pueblo on the 900 block of East Alisal.
Cmdr Vince Maiorana told Central Coast News they responded to reports of a man with a knife at the market. Once arriving on scene, responding officers say the man was waving the knife in the crowded parking lot.
According to Maiorana, officers tried to tell the suspect to put down the knife. When the man did not comply, he was tased, said Maiorana. Cell phone photos sent to Central Coast News show the suspect on the ground outside the market.
Officers then say when making the arrest, the man grabbed for his weapon again. That’s when the suspect was shot and killed by officers, said Maiorana.
Witnesses told Central Coast News they heard several gunshots.
The man has not been identified.
No one else was injured. The entire parking lot was blocked off with caution tape during the investigation.
Officers involved in Friday’s shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. It’s not been confirmed how many officers are involved.
