Monterey County men admit to failing to maintain workers’ compensation insurance

Two men have pleaded to misdemeanor charges of failing to secure workers’ compensation insurance, Monterey County prosecutors said.

Everado Nieto, 47, of Soledad, owns Evercleen, a carpet-cleaning business. An employee filed a complaint with the state claiming that he was owed wages and had been injured on the job.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office began investigating and ended up catching Nieto in Contractor State License Board sting operation during. That’s where prosecutors learned he had employees but not the required Workers’ Compensation insurance.

Nieto was given three years of probation and ordered to pay fines.

Guz Lazrovich, 38, of Monterey is a licensed contractor who told Contractor State License Board officials he was exempt from needing the insurance because he didn’t have employees.

In July, however, state officials discovered he did, in fact, have people helping him and he said he would get the required workers’ compensation insurance.

He was placed on three years of probation and ordered to pay fines.
