San Juan Bautista group looks to halt gas station project

A group in San Juan Bautista is battling a planned gas station and fast food development at the corner of Highway 156 and Alameda.

City officials have already approved the project but it’s now on hold because some residents are threatening a lawsuit.

A group called the Alliance of Concerned Citizens Organized for Responsible Development says the project will ruin the character of the city, which is known for its quaint storefronts and preserved historical buildings.

The group feels that the project “snuck up on residents,” but city council members say they’ve taken all necessary steps. The area is already zoned for commercial use, says council member Jolene Cosio, contradicting opponents who claim the city changed zoning laws for the project.

City officials will hold a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the issue with residents.
