Road in Del Rey Oaks proven to be treacherous

Route 218 is a nearly three-mile stretch that connects the City of Del Rey oaks to Seaside.

But those three miles have proven to be pretty treacherous. Just this past Monday there was a two-car accident that took out a telephone pol

“We do have our fair share of accidents on 218,” said Paul Keene who has lived in a house off 218 for 40 years.

“People behind me if they’re not paying attention, I have to slow down to turn down on Canyon St. and I have concerns about being rear ended,” he said.

Keene is retired now but for 16 years of his life he worked for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department as a patrol officer and investigator.

He said experienced the speed change from 35 mph to 45 mph and even though the cars are whipping by faster, he said the speed isn’t the issue.

However, he said it might become an issue this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the Continental Tire Grand Prix. Route 218 will be full of new-timers.

“They get out there on the race track and they try to simulate what they see and we just get too much speed,” Keene said.

Keene said he has some advice for the 218 regulars.

“They have drive defensively, they just have to watch because you have to assume the other people aren’t paying attention to you,” he said.
