Dog, once trapped in Russia, arrives in Pacific Grove for adoption
A dog is resting on the Central Coast Tuesday evening, after traveling thousands of miles across the globe in hopes of being adopted to a forever home. Peace of Mind Dog Rescue (POMDR), based in Pacific Grove, has brought Cherry all the way from Sochi, Russia.
Prior to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, controversy erupted when stray dogs were being trapped and euthanized in Sochi. Cherry was among those trapped. According to POMDR, fortunately someone freed Cherry and took her to a makeshift animal shelter, leading to her journey to the Central Coast.
Cherry made stops in Moscow and Germany, before arriving Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco.
Her foster family, Simona Prochazka, will care for the pup before a long-term adoption is made.
Prior to the Olympic Games, the stray dog population was accused of biting people and barging into Olympic venues. At the time, the International Olympic Committee said only sick strays were being exterminated.
Since then, many dogs have been rescued and brought to the United States.
Peace of Mind Dog Rescue is a resource and advocate for senior dogs and senior people on the Central Coast. According to its website, POMDR finds loving homes for dogs whose guardians can no longer care for them and for senior dogs in shelters.
