NPS Teams Up with Hartnell for Internship Opportunities
3 the naval post graduate and hartnell have teamed up to create the next wave of scientists. central coast news reporter ricardo navarro has more on the program that has opened the door for many community college students making them competitive in the real world. 3 *trt:outcue::*this is 17 year old lauren polo. 30:20 it collects temperature data, coordinate data, whatever we can get. polo is a freshman at hartnell — and 3 the project she is refeering to is something she worked along side graduate students at the naval post graduate school. gaining skillset that the majority of community college students her age have. 24:48 i’ve never worked in a lab before, this was my first time exposed to any of the new technology polo got the opportunity thorugh the hartnell college stem internship program. the college gets outside funding to sponor students like polo to get hands on learning experience. 25:35 its a unique opportunity, i never thought i would see myself in a lab, this early on. space systems lab professor jim newman is polo’s mentor. newman said the program has helped nps outreach in the community. 21:28 its a chance for our local population to take advantage of world wide research opportunities 3 standup: over the past seven years hartnell college has had 370 students complete research internships, a third of those students complete their research here at nps. 38:44 it makes them competitive 3 science and math director at hartnell andy newtown. 38:49 students that go straight to the 4 year university out of high school, dont get these kinds of experiences, until they get either in grad school or senior year. polo is grafteful to not only have gained experience at such a young age but have a clearer focus for what she wants in the futre. 27:23 i didnt know what a lab was like until i came here, and now working in a lab i realized i really like how it is and what im doing in monterey ricardo n, yccn 3 nps is among may other institutions hartnell partners up with. the monterey bay aquarium also has an internship program.
