Silicon Valley drug ring probe nets 18 arrests
Santa Clara County prosecutors say a multi-jurisdictional investigation into a major Mexican cartel drug distribution ring netted 18 arrests.
The investigation also resulted in the seizure of a methamphetamine lab, a concentrated cannabis drug lab, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, weapons, and thousands of dollars in laundered cash.
Those arrested include Esdras Avila Carrillo of San Jose. Carrillo, also known as “Blanco,” is believed to be a high-ranking cartel member responsible for millions of dollars in illegal drug trade throughout the Bay Area.
Prosecutors said that when arrested, Carrillo tried to take a police officers’ gun.
The investigation, nicknamed Operation Five Degrees, was conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It started with the arrest of a low-level drug dealer in 2012.
“Mexican cartels are using Silicon Valley as a major artery for the flow of illegal drugs,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “Prosecutors in my office and law enforcement agents are working closely together to cut off this toxic flood. We will track, arrest and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who traffic narcotics in our community.”
The investigation led authorities to a meth lab in Elk Grove called “the Store” believed to have been manufacturing millions of dollars worth of the drug each month.
Previously in this investigation, more than 45 pounds of meth, cocain and heroin were seized by authorities.
