Pacific Grove dog rescue saves dog from Sochi, Russia

Local organization Peace of Mind Dog Rescue is bringing a dog rescued from Sochi, Russia to the area for adoption.

Cherry, a 22-pound, 5-year-old mixed breed, was trapped to be destroyed during the culling of stray dogs in Sochi in advance of the Winter Olympics.

A citizen sprung the dog from the trap and brought the animal to a makeshift animal shelter constructed in response to the culling of the dogs. The shelter filled up quickly and rescue groups around the world are pitching it to help take care of the displaced dogs.

A Peace of Mind volunteer, Dr. Simona Prochazka, was in Sochi for the Olympics and witnessed the stray program first-hand. She’ll be fostering Cherry when the dog arrives from Russia.

Cherry will travel 1,000 miles from Sochi to Moscow, then another 1,000 to Frankfurt and then 6,000 miles to San Francisco, where Peace of Mind will get her.
