Santa Cruz police release new video, sketch in couple’s robbery

Santa Cruz police on Tuesday released a police artist’s sketch of one of the individuals who tried to rob an 86-year-old woman last week.

That’s in addition to new surveillance video released Monday and obtained from a Center Street business. The suspects appear about 41 seconds into the video in the upper left corner.

On Wednesday, April 16, the woman and her husband were walking on Center Street near Church Street in downtown Santa Cruz after having dinner, around 8:40 p.m. Two males, believed to be in their mid to late teens, knocked the woman down to the ground and tried unsuccessfully to take her purse.

The woman fractured her pelvis in the fall, Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark said.

Police are actively seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects. Officers previously collected this surveillance video footage from Santa Cruz City Hall as well. Clark says the footage police has been able to obtain is grainy and low-quality, but it’s all they have to work with right now.

Anyone who has information about the case is asked to call the investigations unit directly at 420-5820 or call the anonymous tip line at 420-5995. You can also send an anonymous tip via the text-a-tip program through the police department’s smartphone app or website.
