Fourteen dogs and puppies rescued from parked car in Monterey

Employees with the SPCA for Monterey County rescued 14 dogs and puppies from a vehicle parked in Monterey Monday afternoon.

Four adult dogs and 10 puppies, all Pomeranians and Chihuahas, were found stacked in seven, tiny, filthy crates inside an older model Subaru. The cluttered car was parked at Virgin Avenue and Montecito Avenue.

There were as many as four dogs in each crate, and the crates averaged about 20′ long by 13′ wide by 11′ tall in size. The crater were so small that many of the dogs were unable to stand up straight, according to Beth Brookhouser, spokeswoman for the SPCA.

The owner told SPCA staff, when questioned, that the SPCA was taking her money and that she could “sell the puppies for $2,000 in Carmel.”

The animals are undergoing examination by SPCA veterinarians.
