“Bad Beard Bandit” arrested in connection to Capitola Citibank robbery
Twenty-eight-year-old Gerardo Orozco Lopez was arrested on suspicions of being the “Bad Beard Bandit”, allegedly responsible for eight bank robberies since November.
The FBI, along with Capitola police, arrested Lopez at his Half Moon Bay home without incident Thursday.
Capitola police detectives used surveillance video from businesses in a wide area around Citibank on 41st Avenue to identify him. They collaborated with the FBI to identify him as the bandit and arrest him.
Agents say while he never showed a weapon during the eight robberies in question, he allegedly made threats that included the use of a weapon.
He’s become known as the Bad Beard Bandit” because he wore a dark, poor quality costume beard.
He was booked into the San Francisco County Jail.
