Deputies shoot, kill suspect at Palo Colorado

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is investigating Thursday’s deadly shooting involving sheriff’s deputies in the Palo Colorado area south of Carmel.

The DA’s Office was out Friday afternoon for a follow-up investigation.

Assistant District Attorney Terry Spitz told Central Coast News deputies shot and killed a burglary suspect who was on the run. The suspect had no prior run-ins with law enforcement, deputies said.

The incident started as a call for a burglary at a house in the Garrapata area near Big Sur. Deputies chased the suspect through back roads until they finally caught up with him at Palo Colorado Road. The suspect then crashed into a deputy patrol car and attempted to run, but at least one deputy shot him.

Two deputies involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The District Attorney’s Office is investigating whether the suspect had a weapon. His name has not yet been released. A woman, who was in the car with the suspect, was arrested, but authorities have not said what the charges were.

The incident blocked the road and forced residents to stay away from their homes. Authorities reopened the road as of 11:55 p.m. Thursday.

There are no additional suspects at-large, despite initial reports indicating otherwise.
