Salinas Valley Spartans begin home play

Minor league football is back on the Central Coast with the Salinas Valley Spartans. If you haven’t heard, they defeated the Sacramento Wildcats 10-7 in their Home opener at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Saturday.

If you’re looking for some homegrown entertainment the whole family can enjoy then why not support the Salinas Valley Spartans? They play in the Pacific Coast League which encompasses teams from the Salinas all the way up to the Sacramento area. The Spartans are off to a good start with a record of 1-1.

Tyrone Ward is the founder and co-owner, he says what makes this team unique is that it’s truly community oriented, “All of the players are required to do a large number of community service hours. In 2013, even though we didn’t have a team yet, we logged over 1200 hours! I truly believe in “paying it forward” and am making that belief part of the Spartan Way.”

Ward says that the Spartans will provide you with a professional game ‘feel’.

“We all live, work, and play in the Salinas Valley; heck, we ARE the Salinas Valley! We are a positive organization that gives back to its community, works hard in this community, grew up in this community, and loves this community!”

What do you say to those he believe there’s nothing to do here in Salinas? “Well, we are here to change that! We provide a professional game experience with a Tailgate party before the games with live music from local bands, a DJ, Famous Dave’s BBQ, alcohol sales, and fun activities. During the game we have Famous Dave’s doing concessions, beer sales, amazing local singers, and fun things to do for the whole family!”

Here’s the team’s coaching staff and schedule of games:

Head Coach: Steven Zenk

Quarterbacks: Ron Stefani

Running Backs: Richard Magdeleno

Wide Receivers: Sean Gomes

Offensive Line: Steve Grace

Defensive Line: Mike Aaroe
