Salinas cyclist, 70, dies after March 4 collision

A 70-year-old man hit by a car in Salinas earlier this month has died from his injuries, police said.

Jose Velasquez was riding his bicycle in the area of North Davis Road and West Laurel Drive just before 5 a.m. on March 4.

According to Salinas Police Cmdr. Henry Gomez, a 38-year-old man drove into the left turn lane at the intersection with North Davis Road and came across the man laying in the roadway directly in front of him. It appeared Velazquez had fallen off his bike, which was a short distance away. The driver struck the man, causing major injuries.

On Monday, Salinas police announced that Velazquez has died. Police investigators are working to reconstruct the collision and are looking for anyone who may have witnessed it. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Richard Diaz at 758-7189.
