Marina man arrested after police find bomb-making supplies

Marina police arrested a 32-year-old man after officers say they found a pipe bomb and bomb-making supplies in his possession.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of Lexington Court just after 10 p.m. Thursday for reports of a physical altercation. Officers met there with John Locke, who told them he’d been battered by his neighbor. Locke was treated at the scene for his injuries and then transported to a local hospital.

Officers determined Locke’s neighbor was defending himself against Locke’s aggressive actions, and he was not arrested.

Inside Locke’s home, officers found a pipe bomb. They evacuated the residence and sealed off the area. Members of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad responded and de-activated the device. They also found additional bomb-making supplies, as well as what police have described as unknown materials. The hazardous materials teams from the Salinas and Seaside Fire Departments responded, and ultimately determined the unknown substances posed no health or safety risks.

Locke was arrested at a hospital on suspicion of felony possession of a destructive device, possession of material to manufacture a destructive device and drug charges. He was booked into Monterey County Jail.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Marina Police Department at 384-7575 or 884-1210.
