Santa Cruz police warning of alleged mail theft

Santa Cruz police are warning residents of a suspected mail thief.

According to deputy chief Steve Clark, a man took packages from the porch of a home on Westmoor Court recently. Clark said the man also visited the same house a few weeks prior to the theft, and rang the doorbell.

The man was greeted by a guest at the home.

According to Clark, the man asked the guest who answered “Is Dave here?” No one named Dave lives at the home, police said.

Officers believe the suspect was “casing” the home. The empty boxes from the packages he took were later found discarded on Plateau Avenue.

Home surveillance footage captured images of the subject at the home on two different days. He’s described as a Latino male in his twenties with a thin build and short, close-cropped hair. His truck is believed to be a black Toyota Tacoma or similar with a black utility/tool box in the bed.

Police ask anyone who sees him to call 911.
