Los Gatos woman charged in crash that killed Santa Cruz man

A Los Gatos woman accused of fatally striking a motorcyclist with her SUV on Highway 17 in December will be arraigned Tuesday afternoon on a hit-and-run charge.

Joline Fay Cohen, 47, is charged with causing the death of Michael Schaupp, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Schaupp, 32, of Santa Cruz was a musician and avid cyclist. He was struck while riding on Highway 17 near Idylwild Road in Los Gatos. The impact threw him 20 feet, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver sped off and the SUV was later found abandoned at the Bear Creek Road off-ramp.

An arrest warrant was later issued for Cohen’s arrest, and she turned herself in to authorities last month.

Cohen, who is no longer in custody, is scheduled to be arraigned in Santa Clara County Superior Court on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death.
