Suspect Caught on Tape Stealing From Salinas Bakery

Caught on camera — a burglar targets a family business in Salinas. Now the business owners have a message for him. Some people out there, may hope the suspect gets caught. But the bakery owners simply want the thief to learn a lesson. The owners said learning not to steal is more valuable to them, than the cash itself.

The owners of Main Street Bakery and Catering said it’s violating to know someone broke into their shop on South Main Street, stealing a couple hundred dollars in cash. But mostly, they’re just disappointed the person made a poor decision.

“He could easily get a job and that’s what saddens me. There’s so much benefit on getting a job that, come on …a couple hundred dollars here and there are not going to make any difference in a future,” said Owner Luz Cedillo.

The business has only been open for a little more than a year now and they are still trying to turn a profit. Cedillo said a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into building the success they’ve had so far.

“Work really hard for what we have, day and night. There are days that we come in at eight in the morning but we don’t leave until 3 or 4 in the middle of the night,” Cedillo said.

It’s a family business with investments from friends as well. But on Sunday afternoon, a young man wearing a dark jacket with orange sleeves and a fedora, made all that hard work seem wasted — when he ran off with several hundred dollars of their hard-earned cash.

Cedillo said the thief broke in through the back door not once, but twice and went for the cash register the second time. She said the worst part about it, is losing trust in people as a business owner. Cedillo tries to welcome everyone with open arms.

“We try to outreach and make sure that people, children know that we’re here for them. We encourage teenagers from the high school to come in and sit down after school, they don’t have to buy anything,” Cedillo said.

If you have any information on this burglary or if you recognize the person in the video, call Salinas police.
