Monterey Bay F.C. midfielder Walmer Martinez handed 4 match suspension
SEASIDE, Calif. (KION) - The USL Championship suspended Walmer Martinez for four matches, following an altercation after the final whistle in Monterey Bay's match against Oakland on April 6.
Both Martinez and Carlos Herrera were involved in an on-field confrontation between Union and Roots players which happened after the conclusion of the match. A league investigation was immediately launched into the incident.
Initially, Martinez was issued a red card, along with Herrera, but after further review, league officials decided Martinez would receive further punishment. Two Oakland Roots players were also disciplined for their involvement. Neveal Hacksaw and Baboucarr Njie will both serve a three-match suspension.
On social media, Walmer Martinez posted a response to the statement:
"I would like to apologize to our fans and to my teammates for my actions after the final whistle last weekend. What took place doesn't belong in the game of football. I accept the consequences and look forward to being back on the pitch soon."
While Martinez is serving the USL Championship suspension, he remains eligible for U.S. Open Cup competition.
