Marina’s Measure U bond fails despite seeing a majority of supporters

MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Marina's Measure U bond has failed, falling short of the two-thirds majority vote that it needed to pass despite seeing a majority of the city's voters supporting the measure.

If it passed, the $50 million bond measure would have financed the construction of a new fire station, police station and a community center with associated community rooms, according to the city.

The city says that the bond would have been funded through an increased property tax rate of $54.74 per $100,000 of assessed value of taxable property.

The city's fire and police departments currently share a building, with city hall offices in portable buildings that have tarps and sandbags supporting the building's structure.

Tuesday, the city council is expected to start discussing alternative ideas for raising funds to upgrade their facilities
