BIG SUR, Calif. (KION) Caltrans said it has entered into a $2 million contract with S. Chaves Construction to install emergency protective drainage measures along parts of Highway 1 affected by the Dolan Fire.

The agency said engineers are reviewing major drainages, analyzing watershed areas for possible debris flows and coming up with a plan ahead of storms that may come this winter.

Because of the path of the fire and fire suppression that is prioritized, assessment and plans are expected to be finished by early November.

Crews are currently focusing on fortifying drainage infrastructure already in place and clearing, improving or developing access to drainage inlets. They are also looking at potential rock fall locations to find out if they will need to do slope scaling in the near future and assessing bridges.
