Religious leaders hold virtual vigil for those affected by COVID-19 outbreak at Watsonville Post Acute

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) Religious leaders from Watsonville came together to support those affected by a COVID-19 outbreak at the Watsonville Post Acute Center in a virtual vigil.

Leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist faiths spoke about grief and celebrating life in difficult times and prayed for all of those who are struggling.

Speakers included:

  • Jerry Saldaña, Pastor, Iglesia Descubrimiento
  • Bobby Marchessault, Pastor, Missio Dei Community
  • Bill Wurtenberg, Minister's Assistant, Watsonville Buddhist Temple
  • Bruce Burnett, Brother, Watsonville Islamic Center
  • Robin Mathews-Johnson, Reverend, Watsonville First United Methodist Church
  • Susan Birkelo, Reverend, Lutheran Community Church
  • Paula Marcus, Rabbi, Temple Beth El

At last check, Santa Cruz County Officials confirmed that a total of 50 residents and 20 staff members had tested positive for the virus. At least 14 people have died at the facility.

The City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department, which hosted the vigil, shared the following resources for emotional support:
