Monterey County launches rent, utility assistance program for residents impacted by COVID-19

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The Monterey County Department of Social Service announced that it is partnering with United Way to help eligible residents who have lost their jobs or are experiencing reduced income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program will provide rent and utility assistance who those who are eligible, and there are several requirements residents must meet to qualify, including:

  • Income: Households need to meet an income threshold of $54,250 for one person, $62,000 for two people, $69,750 for three people, $77,500 for four people, $83,700 for five people and $89,900 for six people.
  • Residence: People must live within the boundaries of Monterey County.
  • Documentation: Residents will need to show documentation of housing instability as a result of loss or reduction in income due to COVID-19.
  • Proof of income eligibility: Those in need of assistance may need to include a recent tax return, paystub, W-2, bank statement, unemployment award/benefit or hour reduction notice from an employer or an explanation by the applicant with supporting documents and proof that all other financial resources have been exhausted.
  • Identification: They will need to provide a government issued photo ID that includes the name and date of birth. Non-US IDs are accepted.
  • Past due: Residents will be asked to provide a rent due or delinquency notice.

Those who are eligible for the Monterey County Rent and Utility Assistance program can receive up to $3,000 in benefits, but people receiving rent and/or utility assistance through another program are not eligible.

Participating agencies include Catholic Charities, Central Coast Energy Services, City of Gonzales, City of King, City of Soledad, Goodwill Central Coast, Housing Resource Center, Monterey One Water, North Monterey County Recreation & Park District and Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance.
