MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) The City of Monterey announced Wednesday that it would be closing three area beaches, and now the closure has been expanded to include Friday.

Because of expected crowds over the Fourth of July weekend, the City decided to close Del Monte, San Carlos and McAbee beaches. The closures will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continue through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Ocean activities will be allowed, and those include swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, boogie boarding and diving. Beach activities will not be allowed.

People who violate the order may face a $100 fine for the first violation, $150 for the second and $200 for a third. Nearby parking is also limited or closed, and parking violations are subject to a $125 fine.

Pacific Grove announced that it would close Lovers Point beach Thursday morning, and the City of Monterey said Carmel and Pebble Beach will also close their beaches.
