MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Monterey-Salinas Transit announced that its Board of Directors has approved the purchase of driver protection barriers.

MST said the 96 barriers will be coming soon. The goal is to add an extra layer of protection for drivers to prevent the spread of diseases, such as COVID-19.

Barrier installation is expected to be done by September. The barriers are made up of protective glass and function like a door, according to MST. The company said when a driver enters the cabin, they can open the barrier like a door, close it and adjust the sliding glass to their preference.

MST said the purchase is eligible for reimbursement through FEMA, the CARES Act and other government funding programs.
