PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) The City of Pacific Grove announced that it is issuing a moratorium on residential and commercial evictions that are due to nonpayment of rent as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Pacific Grove City Council passed the moratorium Wednesday at a meeting.

The moratorium covers loss of personal and business income resulting from loss of work or business income resulting from complying with government actions to reduce the spread of coronavirus and medical expenses.

The order is in effect until May 31, but it may be extended.

The city hopes that halting evictions will help people to comply with the Shelter in Place order and minimize an increase in the homeless population.

Unpaid rent will still be due after the moratorium ends.
