Monterey County Board of Supervisors approve request to suspend evictions

UPDATE 3/17/2020 11:45 a.m. The Monterey County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved sending a request to the Monterey County Superior Court to halt evictions.

Tenants would still be required to pay rent during the time.

It would extend through May 31 and would only apply to unincorporated areas because cities have their own jurisdiction.

The goal is to help those affected by coronavirus who are unable to make rent.

KION is told that a shelter in place will be considered later.

PREVIOUS STORY: The Monterey County Board of Supervisors is meeting Tuesday to discuss how it will respond to coronavirus concerns, including the possibility of issuing a shelter in place order.

No action was taken by Supervisors during an emergency session Monday.

County Supervisor Luis Alejo says he asked county counsel Sunday to look at options to bring to the Board of Supervisors.

On Monday, Santa Cruz County joined several Bay Area counties in issuing a shelter in place order.
