JACKSON, Mississippi (WAPT) — A couple of cows took a stroll through Belhaven over the weekend.
Security cameras captured the bovine jaunt at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Jefferson and Manship streets. A Belhaven resident posted the video to the Nextdoor app.
“Just when I thought I had seen it all in Belhaven… Are these cows?” the post said.
Michael Lasseter, director of the State Fairgrounds, said the Dixie Challenge was in town last weekend. It appears that some of the cows got out because of a loose latch on a fence.
“Several cows got outside the fence,” Lasseter said. “What happened after that, we do not know. When they found the cows, they were by Gate 10 (High Street).”
Lasseter said he could not deny that the cows on the video came from the fairgrounds.
“Apparently, the cows came back. According to the Dixie Challenge folks, they had all their cows accounted for,” Lasseter said. “Thank goodness nobody got hurt. If it was our cows, we’re putting new fences in place to make sure they’re more secure.”
Lasseter said new gates were ordered before the cows escaped.
