BOSTON, Massachusetts (WCVB) — Reality TV chef Gordon Ramsay’s new Boston restaurant opened Monday at the Mandarin Oriental with a menu inspired by meals the famously hard-to-please chef would serve in his own home.
The idea for the restaurant was born during the pandemic, with a menu developed in Ramsay’s home.
“The menu began developing in the summer of 2020 at Gordon’s House in LA,” said Michelle Tribble, a winner of Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen reality show.
It’s the first Ramsay’s Kitchen location in the United States.
“He loves the city of Boston’s culinary scene,” said Norman Abdallah, CEO of Gordon Ramsay North America.
Ramsay’s Kitchen is opening at a difficult time for restaurants. That created the opportunity for this restaurant to grab a high-profile location along Boylston Street, but it also presents uncertainty about the future.
“Although we are still in the middle of a pandemic, I think that everyone can feel very safe in coming here and dining with us,” Tribble said.
“Business in Boston is cratered. It’s extremely concerning to every operator and they are literally hanging on by their fingernails right now,” said Bob Luz of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association.
Luz said suburban restaurants are faring better than those in the Greater Boston area and points to the city’s requirement that customers show proof of vaccination as one thing holding the business back.
“It’s really affecting businesses. If a group is coming in from the suburbs, coming to Boston, it’s just easier for them not to have to deal with it,” Luz said.
“Obviously there are some concerns launching in a pandemic but we are doing as much as we can to be as safe as possible,” Tribble said.
