Pebble Beach, Calif. (KION) - Thousands of people are expected at Pebble Beach throughout the rest of the weekend for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

With the large crowds coming to the Monterey Peninsula, safety comes to mind.

Over 50,000 people are expected at Pebble Beach on Thursday for the Pro-Am.
CAL FIRE, the U.S. Department of Emergency Management, and the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and other agencies are working to keep players and fans safe.

"We have ten chief officers here supporting the logistics of everything," said Curtis Rhodes, Fire Captain for CAL FIRE BEU. "We have six drone operators daily, strategically placed throughout Del Monte Forest to gather intelligence and we have about, 30 people staffed,"

Rhodes tells me security planning for the Pro-Am starts six months in advance.

They start preparing by running through scenarios they have experienced in the past and building security measures through those events. In 2024, they say they are also being cautious with the weather.

"We tend to see a lot of trees come down with, entangled power lines, and with the new modifications to the tents out here from the vendors, we have the fire marshal's office," Rhodes said. "Monterey County inspectors were out here, just double-checking and triple-checking that all the structures are sound and ready to go when we get these spectators in here today."

Drones are being used to monitor activities in the forest. These are just some of the shots CAL FIRE has shared from 400 feet in the air. Looking into the future, Rhodes says they are watching the weather.

Traffic is also a concern when getting into the tournament. CAL FIRE says the last thing they want is the traffic to pose a hazard to people traveling on Highway 1 so the Carmel Valley CERT team is helping out with traffic getting in and out of Pebble Beach.

The number of people at Pebble Beach is expected to rise into the weekend.
