Monterey City Council approves installation of Flock Cameras

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON APRIL 4, 2024 AT 4:17 PM- The Monterey City Council voted 3-2 to approve the installation of Flock surveillance cameras throughout the city.

Monterey Police Chief David Hober provided a presentation during Tuesday night's meeting said that the costs are estimated at $135,000 for initial procurement and $105,000 per year after that.

Hober pointed to other local agencies utilizing the ALPR system like Carmel-by-the-Sea Police, Pacific Grove Police, Salinas Police.

City Council also said that Monterey Police will have share a report one year into the program.

Another Central Coast city could be adding automated license plate readers.

Officers said they want the community's input and they will be hosting an in-person and virtual meeting will be held on Monday night at 6 p.m. at the Monterey City Council chambers.

The meeting will be available on Zoom.

Monterey Police Chief David Hober said that adding license plate readers could cost the city from $66,000 to $105,000 a year.

Hober said the readers would assist in finding suspects involved in criminal activity, recovering stolen property and preventing crime overall.

Police said vehicles involved in a crime would be placed on a digital "hot list" to alert police.

Monterey Police said that they would like to have 35 readers available but there will be another option for 22 cameras.

Hober said that they point successes at other agencies currently using a plate reader program like Salinas, Pacific Grove, Sand City, Seaside and Carmel Police.

There will also be a second meeting on Feb. 8 that will also take place at the Monterey City Council Chambers at 6 p.m. The meeting will be available on Zoom
