Baltimore police make progress in court-ordered reform effort

BALTIMORE (AP) — Federal prosecutors say the Baltimore Police Department has completed its first official step toward fulfilling a series of court-ordered reforms. The consent decree was imposed in 2017 after federal investigators found a pattern of unconstitutional policing practices following the death of Freddie Gray, who died from spinal injuries sustained in the back of a police van. One part of the decree where the department has made the most progress pertains to the transportation of people in custody, while the other focuses on officer safety and wellness. Police Commissioner Richard Worley said Wednesday that he hopes to achieve full compliance by the end of his three-year contract.
