Justin Cummings becomes first African-American chair for Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV)- During their first board meeting of the year, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted Justin Cummings to serve as the board chair for 2024.

City officials confirmed that Cummings is the first African-American to serve as board chair for the Board of Supervisors.

"I’m deeply honored to accept this role from my colleagues and look forward to the year ahead as we work with our community to build a more equitable and just Santa Cruz County for all residents,” Cummings said.  

Cummings has been a supervisor since 2022 when he beat current Santa Cruz City Councilwoman Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson. He had previously served on the Santa Cruz City Council.
