Family, friends, colleagues bid farewell to Philadelphia officer killed in airport garage shooting

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Family, friends and fellow law enforcement officers gathered Tuesday to bid farewell to a Philadelphia police officer killed in an airport parking garage shooting that also wounded another officer earlier this month. Fifty-year-old officer Richard Mendez and another officer saw several people breaking into a car in the parking lot at Philadelphia International Airport on Oct. 12. A confrontation ensued and Mendez was shot four times and later died at a hospital. Officer Raul Ortiz was hit in the arm. One of the suspects was also shot and killed and three men were later arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder.
