EU leaders paper over differences after a cacophony mars their response to the Israel-Hamas war

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union leaders are struggling to paper over their differences as a cacophony of opinions and reactions mar the bloc’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. But at a video summit Tuesday, they claimed to stand united in recognizing Israel’s right to defend itself within the bounds of international law. After blaming Hamas for causing the suffering, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that “there is no contradiction in standing with Israel in solidarity and acting for the humanitarian needs for the Palestinians.”
