Train hits unoccupied vehicle on Sanborn Road overpass tracks in Salinas

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)- The train tracks on the Sanborn Road overpass have opened after an Amtrak Train hit an unoccupied white vehicle on Thursday afternoon.

A Union Pacific spokesperson confirmed to KION that the incident occurred around 12:10 p.m. as an Amtrak train crashed into the white vehicle on the train tracks near Work Street and Elvee Circle.

Union Pacific says that the train crew was not injured and train traffic is open.

No details have been released on why the vehicle was parked near the train tracks.

A little after noon we were alerted to a vehicle versus train crash in Salinas.

Our reporter on the scene said the crash appears to have occurred on the South Sanborn Road overpass.

No details have been released if anyone was injured during the crash or why the vehicle was on the tracks. Salinas Police said the vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
