One dead, one seriously injured after avalanche at Alpine Meadows

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. (KION & CBS13)

UPDATE 1/17/2020 1:00 p.m. One male skier has died and another suffered severe lower body injuries after an avalanche at the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort.

Officials said the search for other potential victims has finished and there are no more victims.

Squaw Alpine officials said the avalanche happened at around 10:16 a.m. between Scott Chute and Promised Land.

The cause of the avalanche is still under investigation.

PREVIOUS STORY:Crews are searching for several people who are missing after an avalanche at Alpine Meadows Friday morning. So far there has been one confirmed dead and another with serious injuries.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office has responded to the scene, and search and rescue crews are out looking for the missing people. It is not clear how many people are missing.

The Sheriff's Office said this is being treated as an isolated incident. The ski resort is still open, but the area around Subway ski run is still closed.

According to the CBS affiliate in Sacramento, the Sierra Avalanche Center rated avalanche conditions as "considerable" for all elevations.
